I keep on going back and forth on how I should divide our budget. I was wondering for the small businesses out there, how much do you set a side for monthly SEO budget? Do you divide that budget between SEO and PPC?

The SEO budget varies, in general, youll have to spend more when youve just started the optimization process.. after getting the results that you want, once youre satisfied..you will have lesser budget cause youll just have to maintain the SEO for those that have good results already..

As for PPC, its pretty much the same, at first, bid high on the keywords that you think fits best for your site and then after getting the results, analyze which ones should be kept and eliminate the ones that did not yield good results.. From that, you could then lower the bid until you get the maximum profit for that PPC ad.

According to my experience PPC budget generally higher than SEO budget. SEO is the most cost effective promotional technique. SEO will take some time to show the results. So we have to allocate more budget for PPC at start. But slowly we can reduce that budget to increase the budget for SEO.

If you have a free hour or two each day, you can do the SEO yourself. It takes a little time to learn about SEO and where to put back links but after that you could easily create about 5 or so back links every hour if not more. If you do hire someone else, I would get a few bids from different SEO companies or experts to find the best deal.
